Iveagh Gardens saved from developers

Campaigners held a simple gathering in the Iveagh Gardens to mark the end of the successful campaign, which prevented plans to irreparably change the Iveagh Gardens, writes Rachel Cunningham.

Plans for the felling of trees, the destruction of a 140-year-old wall and for construction works will not be going ahead after 46,674 Uplift members rallied behind the call to save the gardens, led by a determined campaigner, Pom Boyd.

Pom began her campaign in 2017, after she was shocked to learn that An Bord Pleannála granted permission for these plans to change the face of the gardens.

“You know you have a big problem when the stewards of the city are the ones doing the damage. It was an urgent wake up call, the realisation that the people charged with protecting our heritage aren’t protecting it”, Pom stated, concluding that her predominant feeling “is one of relief.”
