A DUBLIN-BASED food business has moved to a new state-of-the-art premises in Dublin city just six months after launching.

Cream of the Crop – a distinctive range of artisan gelato ice cream made from surplus food stocks – has moved to a new production facility on Cork Street in D8.

The business is the brainchild of Brazilian chef Giselle Makinde and looks set to save up to eight tonnes of food from landfill this year alone.

Giselle started selling online last September with a range of innovative flavours (which change weekly based on the surplus ingredients that are collected/donated).

Up until now her novel range was created in a room in her Portmarnock home. Now Cream of the Crop has relocated to the heart of the capital.

The move will enable Giselle to process and make use of ten times the amount of surplus food than she was able to before.

Giselle said: “The reaction and response to our products and our ethos from customers is way more than I could ever have dreamt of.

“To be in this position is absolutely incredible and will allow me to really step things up and save so much more good food from landfill.

“Now I’ll be able to use new techniques like dehydrating to make use of and transform vegetable and fruit skins into powders to be added to my gelatos.”

Cream Of The Crop’s growth has also enabled it to expand its distribution network, now stocking the retail shelves of Little Italy gourmet grocery in Smithfield and supplying 4Friends Burger on North Great George’s Street, Chef Kwanghi Chan’s new food trailer concept, Bites By Kwanghi, in Leopardstown, and registered charity, Phibsboro Cat Rescue, amongst others.
