Karl Murphy from Finglas saw his dreams realised with the opening of Murphy’s Pizza Shack, but a fire only three weeks after opening saw his dreams shattered.

With a business background in sales, it was an ambition of Mr Murphy’s to open a pizzeria in his native Finglas, to give local employment and to have more time with family.

“An internal fire occurred during the night of Friday/Saturday (Oct 16/17),” Mr Murphy told the Gazette. “We had no cameras in the kitchen so we don’t know the exact cause but arson has been ruled out.

“I had public and employer liability; content insurance was being finalised when the accident occurred, it just hadn’t been signed off. Of course, this is devastating for the staff and I; by Monday, that would have been sorted.”

Acknowledging he will need to spend another €7-10,000 to get the restaurant back up and running, he noted that some of the cookery equipment may be salvageable.

“We are awaiting assessment,” he said. “But I am truly grateful for the response from some local businesses, who have been tremendously supportive.

“For example, I was contacted by a builder’s providers in Clondalkin, and also Elegant John Bathrooms, Finglas who offered materials and goods free of charge. I am flabbergasted at this level of generosity and appreciate such goodwill. It will certainly help us to open more quickly.”

“Having invested so much in setting up this business and employing the lads, I don’t want to lose out on all the pre-planning and setting up. We were getting a great response from our customers; we were providing a good service and giving employment.”

Karl’s sister Emma Murphy and friend, Charlene Gough have started a GoFundMe page to help get the business opened more quickly.

“The pizza shack was operating for just three weeks before the fire,” said Ms Murphy. Thankfully, no one was there at the time and no-one was hurt. The business was thriving with the locals, the support from our local community was incredible; as a family we are so so proud and happy that you all loved “Murphy’s Pizza shack!

“Karl put his life savings into setting up of the business and it’s fair to say there has been bumps along the way but he has held onto his vision.

“We have come together to set this GFM page up to get the business back up and running and to get the staff (3) back to work.

“Many thanks to everyone who has supported the business to date, shared our posts, commented and sent lovely messages, we really do appreciate it.”
