An annual fundraiser for Crumlin Children’s Hospital is set to look a little different this year, with a 5k walk taking place in addition to their usual toy drive.

Ellie’s Xmas Toy Appeal was launched by Elaine Darcy to bring happiness to the children of Crumlin Children’s Hospital at Christmas, after experiencing life on the ward first hand, as her daughter Ellie had heart surgery in the hospital when she was born.

Each year, alongside Crumlin United and Ashleaf Shopping Centre, Elaine organises for new toys to be donated for the children at the hospital from the local community in Crumlin. These are then delivered by Santa himself close to Christmas.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Santa will be unable to visit the ward with the presents this year. Undeterred, the fundraiser will still go ahead with the addition of a 5K walk and run from Crumlin village this Sunday.

Speaking to Dublin Gazette, Elaine said: “Unfortunately, due to covid we can not get Santa to visit the ward this year – which is upsetting but understandable to keep precious children safe.

“We are still going ahead with our fundraiser and trying to not only collect much needed toys for the hospital (which will be delivered to CMRF to be isolated and sanitised before being delivered to the ward) but to also raise funds for electric beds on the heart ward.”

Crumlin United have set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the beds, with local man Leon Johnston helping to organise the 5k walk/run to encourage even more people to donate to the worthy cause.

“We are hoping the people of Crumlin will turn up in their Christmas hats and jumpers and help the hospital, which is such big part of our community We are hoping Covid will not stop the good people of Crumlin supporting our appeal.”

The walk will begin at 11:30am this Sunday.
