New research reveals that Dublin is the seventh most romantic city break destination in the world, with Paris, France the number one choice!

The study by Bounce analysed cities across the world on factors such as the number of romantic hotels, romantic restaurants and romantic activities to reveal the world’s most romantic city break destinations.

It was no surprise to see that Paris, France, topped the list with a score of 8.87 out of 10. Paris’s renaissance art and unique architecture attract couples from across the world, with the city stunningly light by night.

Couples can enjoy a whole new experience by night, a barge tour down the Seine and peruse the stunning architecture lit up, with buskers, cafés, street art, theatre and restaurants galore to add to the ambience.

Paris offers 706 romantic hotels (6.7 per km2), and 1,511 romantic restaurants (14.3 per km2). Paris has arguably some of the most luxurious restaurants in the world with La Liste named Guy Savoy’s restaurant at La Monnaie de Paris as the best restaurant in the world.

San Francisco in the US scored 7.59 out of 10, to see it take the number 2 ranking in the slot. Known for its rolling hills, amazing views over the bay, and gorgeous architecture, San Francisco is perfect for a romantic getaway.

The city is home to 310 romantic activities including a stroll through Golden Gate Park, or a trip in the city’s famous cable cars. The San Francisco Bay Area also has a great selection of day spas and wellness centers, offering couples’ massages and twilight spa sessions. 

Amsterdam, Netherlands came in third with its beautiful flower environment, known especially for Dutch tulips, making for a vibrant flower display all year round. From quaint canals to historical sights, art museums and boat trips, it is certainly one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe.

Barcelona, Spain came in fourth place and is home to some of the most striking Gaudi architecture you can find, such as the towering Sagrada Familia and the quirky Casa Milà.

But it’s also renowned for its divine Tapas restaurants,  boasting 800 romantic restaurants, along with its compelling street markets, bus tours, cable cars and marina area. So much to see and do!

In fifth place was Lisbon, Portugal, which is famed for being a city of light, thanks to the immense reflection of the Tagus river, inspiring filmmakers all over the world.

From taking a romantic stroll through Alfama’s narrow streets to its historical gardens and picturesque river cruises from the southern harbour along with its selection of romantic restaurants to visit albeit  accommodation here is by no means cheap.

Florence in Italy was voted into sixth place with Dublin coming in seventh before the historical Seville in Spain coming in eighth place ahead of Santa Barbara in the US and Marrakesh in Morocco in tenth place.

While Dublin scored well or its setting, it did score very low for romantic hotels, perhaps indicating the shortage of accommodation. No doubt Dublin city’s appeal with its vibrant nightlife and musical venues, along with its architecture gave it a high appeal.

The city of Brighton came in first place for the most romantic UK city break destinations, with a score of 8 out of 10. The seaside resort is a popular tourist destination, renowned for its diverse community, vibrant music, and art scene. Brighton has a large LGBTQ+ population, which led to its recognition as the ‘unofficial gay capital of the UK’.

The second favourite UK city goes to the ancient city of York with its  charming buildings and spectacular Gothic cathedral. The city is also the birthplace of W. H. Auden, who famously penned poems about love, adding to the city’s romantic offerings.

Bath ranks in third place, with its Roman-built bathhouses, it has a distinctive culture and cuisine and offers a fabulous range of boutique shopping, afternoon tea breaks, etc. Proving architecture has a huge attraction, Canterbury in Kent came in fourth, and Edinburgh in Scotland taking fifth place.

The Scottish capital is home to stunning architecture, beautiful backdrops, and secret spots which make for the perfect date. The imposing castle looming over the city also makes for a perfect photo opportunity.
