A major programme of investment is set to be launched by Iarnród Éireann next week, which will see lift replacements and station upgrades in 12 stations across Dublin.
The investment is set to improve the reliability of lift systems, as well as increase the accessibility of the rail network in the capital for those with reduced mobility. Funded by the National Transport Authority, the programme will see €3.3 million invested in the first part of a multi-annual programme.
Skerries, Balbriggan and Dun Laoghaire stations will all see the installation of new heavy duty stainless steel electric traction lifts, and all 12 stations will see new lift control systems installed, including re-cabling of lift control equipment and sensors, and other system improvements.
Malahide and Donabate stations will be the first stations in the programme, with works commencing on August 31 and September 2 respectively. Alternative arrangements will be advised to customers of reduced mobility, to ensure continued access to services while works take place.
Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive, Jim Meade, said: “With new trains and station enhancements planned, accessibility will be central to the design of all improvements we deliver under the National Development Plan.
“However, improving the reliability and performance of our existing lift network is crucial to ensure customers with reduced mobility have confidence in using our services. While it is unavoidable that the works themselves will result in lifts being temporarily out of service, we have arrangements in place at each of the stations affected to maintain access to services during the works.”
“With funding from the NTA, we can now progress this renewal programme, and upgrade lifts which are older, and which have been the subject of vandalism and misuse, and prolonged exposure to the elements.”
List of planned works
- Works to begin in Malahide on August 31, to be completed by October 2. Trains for customers requiring access to be directed to platform 1
- Works to begin in Donabate on September 2, to be completed by October 6. There will be ramp access to both platforms.
- Works to begin in Raheny on September 7, to be completed by October 9. There will be ramp access to both platforms.
- Works to begin in Dun Laoghaire on September 23, to be completed by November 25. There will be access to the southbound platform, but those travelling northbound are asked to use Sandycove Station, and road transfer to Dun Laoghaire.
- Works to begin in Skerries on September 23, to be completed by November 26. Trains for customers requiring access to be directed to platform 1
- Works to begin in Balbriggan on September 23, to be completed by November 27. There will be access to the northbound platform, but those travelling southbound are being asked board/alight at Skerries. Road transfer will be provided between Skerries and Balbriggan.
- Works to begin in Rush and Lusk on September 28, to be completed by October 30. There will be ramp access to both platforms.
- Works to begin in Salthill and Monkstown on September 30, to be completed by November 3. Arrangements at these stations are to be confirmed.
- Works to begin in Bayside on October 5, to be completed by November 6. Passengers are being asked to use Sutton or Howth Junction. For passengers alighting at Howth Junction, road transfer from Howth Junction to Bayside.
- Works to begin in Tara Street on October 26, to be completed by November 26. Passengers are being asked to use Connolly or Pearse stations.
- Works to begin in Clontarf Road on October 28, to be completed by December 1. Passengers are being asked to alight at Connolly. There will be a road transfer between Connolly and Clontarf Road.
- Works to begin in Clonsilla on November 9, to be completed by December 11. There will be ramp access to both platforms, and assistance available between platforms.
