Man (20) dies in Dublin Port accident

A young Dublin man who tragically died in an accident at work has been named locally, writes Kim O’Leary.

Matthew Grimes, 20, died while working at Dublin Port on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services and Gardai rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised but were unable to save the worker whose body was removed to Dublin City morgue.

SIPTU members expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Matthew Grimes and sadly admitted that deaths like his are “not an uncommon occurrence”.

SIPTU Transport Division Organiser, Karan O Loughlin said: “Our members wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Matthew Grimes.

“Our thoughts are with the family of this young man who so tragically lost his life in his workplace.”

It is understood that five workers have died, and others have been seriously injured, in various ports around Ireland, including in Dublin Port, since 2018.

A garda spokesperson said that investigations into the death are ongoing.
