A pest control provider has unveiled its 2023 pest callout data, highlighting rats, flies, and midges as the top three pests for the year. Rentokil reported that rats took the top spot, making up 43 per cent of the total callouts, with Dublin experiencing the highest number of rodent-related service requests.

The  pest control provider highlighted that rodent issues can lead to property damage, contamination of stored goods, and the spread of diseases, such as Hantavirus and Salmonellosis.

As the winter period brings a drop in temperature, rats and mice seek refuge indoors and homes and businesses across Dublin are advised to remain vigilant.

Flies and midges also featured prominently in Rentokil’s 2023 records. Flies were the second-highest in callout volume (24 per cent), followed by midges (18 per cent).

“Throughout 2023, Rentokil has observed a significant increase in pest control service requests across the country, with rats emerging as the predominant pest concern, particularly in the Dublin region, where they constitute the majority of callouts,” said Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil.

“The colder months typically foster heightened human-rodent interactions, and underscore the importance of proactive measures.

“If you suspect a rodent issue on your premises, consider the effectiveness of rodent-proofing, such as our innovative Flexi Armour, a robust barrier solution.”
