Widespread regret at sudden passing of author Barry

All at the Dublin Gazette, and in particular our MD Mick McGovern, was shocked to hear of the sudden passing last week of Barry Burke, who in the past two years co-authored two books with Mick.

The two volumes of ‘Not A Lot Of People Know This’ were fascinating reads, as they traced the origin of hundreds of idioms and their definitions. The books became best sellers in the Dublin area and came about through the intellectual testing of both authors of each other’s knowledge of where sayings came from.

For years they had  entertained each other on this subject and when Covid hit the country back in 2019, they decided to turn their hobby into a  published tome for the ages.

A resident of Churchtown, Barry died peacefully but unexpectedly at his home last Thursday (May 23) and will be sadly missed by his loving wife Niamh, son Colin, daughter Lilia, sisters Paula and Siobhán, brother Damien, father-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.  Barry was predeceased by his parents Don and Betty and his nephew Graham.

After reposing at  Fanagans Funeral Home, Willbrook, Rathfarnham last Monday, his funeral service took place last Tuesday (May 28th)  at the Victorian Chapel at Mt. Jerome Crematorium, followed by cremation. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
