St Mary’s Secondary School held an outside, Covid safe, graduation ceremony for sixth year students recently, in acknowledgement of all their hard work and effort over six years.
“They were absolutely fantastic during the first lockdown in fifth year and really adapted to online learning and everything that goes with it. They experienced another lockdown this year in sixth year and again they could not be faulted,” said John Moore, Deputy Principal.
Students and staff got to enjoy some well-earned ice-cream. Around midday, all the students lined up around the grounds to clap out the sixth years, who were donning St Mary’s blue gown and cap, and made the long walk to the basketball courts where the ceremony was held.

“It was a great pity that parents, guardians and family were unable to attend. However, we had two cameras in place to stream the event live using Zoom and we hope to release the recording at a later date,” said John.
The Principal, Dr Edel Greene addressed the graduating students, before the nominees for Student of the Year were announced – Cody Fitzsimons, Rachel Crowley, Emma O’Toole and Amy Reidy. The overall award went to Rachel Crowley and Amy Reidy announced as the Sports Person of the Year.
The New Head Girl for 2021-2022, Emma Duffy and Deputy Head Girl, Sarah McMahon, were introduced before outgoing Head Girl, Amy Reidy and Deputy Head Girl, Emma O’ Toole made speeches recalling many magical and funny moments from their time at St Mary’s.

They praised the various teachers, principal, deputy principal, form teachers and retiring teacher, Ms Bernie Donnelly. Sixth Year Senior Prefects presented some very generous gifts and flowers to everyone which were most appreciated. Tears and emotions a-plenty before the traditional throwing of the caps in the air concluded the graduation ceremony. To mark this very special occasion, hot snacks and soft drinks were served!
