A man in his twenties was arrested following the death last week of a pensioner in sheltered accommodation at a south inner city flat complex.
Kwok Ping Cheng, 76, was found dead at Robinson’s Court off Cork Street. The victim, who was a Hong Kong native, was discovered lying in a pool of blood in his flat by a regular care worker who visited him on Thursday.
Gardaí say that the man was arrested on Wednesday morning and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a south Dublin Garda station on suspicion of murder.
It is understood that many of the elderly residents living in the accommodation have asked to leave the area after the death – the third such killing at the complex over a 15 year period.
Mr Cheng has been described locally as a quiet man who mostly kept to himself but was well liked by neighbours who say they are deeply shocked by his death.
It is believed that Mr Cheng had lived at Robinson’s Court for at least five years and lived in Ireland for many years.
“He was a nice man, everyone would know him to see around the area,” said John, a local. “It’s very tragic and everyone is shocked and upset, some people are even thinking of moving on now from the area,” he added.
The complex is run by Dublin City Council and many residents are frail or have some difficultly in moving around.
Local Sinn Fein councillor Máire Devine said that many residents are afraid and very vulnerable after the recent death of Mr Cheng.
“They’re all really elderly and some of them would be really vulnerable,” she said. She also expressed condolences to the family and friends of Mr Cheng.
