Developments on NCI’s Magdalene Laundry site proposal

by Rachel Cunningham

Architects involved in the proposal to use a former Magdalene Laundry site in Dublin as an education facility for the National College of Ireland have been inspired by London’s Kingston University Town House building.

In 2022, the government gave the green light for a proposed National Centre for Research and Remembrance at the historically significant location.

Investigation into potential educational uses for the building is currently underway by the Office of Public Works.

The award-winning Kingston University building, which was designed by Dublin-based Grafton Architects, may be used as a reference point for the redevelopment of the Seán McDermott street site.

NCI is pushing for the former laundry site to become a base for early learning intervention teams working with children in Dublin Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Wexford and Louth.
