Denim – TK Maxx have the blues covered

Denim is just perfect for the transition from Spring into Summer, denim jackets add an extra layer and can be cast aside when temperatures rise, as can denim waistcoats, baggy shirts or a trench coat in the popular, sustainable material.

As far back as the 1940s, US GIs took their denim jeans with them overseas but it was in the 1950s, after WW11 had ended, and production factories got back to work, that saw denim become a very popular leisurewear item.

Zippers were incorporated in 1954 as the younger generation chose denim jeans (and overalls/dungarees), which became somewhat of a worldwide trend. When sex icon Marilyn Monroe began wearing tight fitting jeans, well, the future of denim was ensured!

When broody actors James Dean and Marlon Brando wore jeans in cult movies such as ‘The Wild One’ and ‘Rebel without a Cause’, denim’s popularity was further endorsed. As always, it was the younger generation making anti-establishment statements against the Vietnam War or government policies who wore the jeans en masse, as did bikers and rockers.

We’ve seen denim jeans change from heavy material in dark blue denims (lumberjack jeans with rolled up ends) to light weight and stretchy denims, faded jeans, cut offs, wide legged bell bottoms to straight-legged jeans, boot cut styles, denim shorts, risque mini-mini skirts to midi length and maxis. Hipsters, high waisted, buttoned or zipped, torn knees or frayed bum design, denims will never go out of fashion!

This week, we take a look at TK Maxx, now one of Ireland’s most popular style chains which caters for an expansive selection of ranges and designs, from low costs to high street prices and right up to the top end designers.
