Loreto Hockey Club in Rathfarnham launched a new initiative aimed at bringing members of the local community together and getting them active from this week.

The Loreto Walk and Talk community initiative is free and open to everyone in the local community and allows people to meet in a well-lit, safe environment at the Loreto Hockey Club pitch on the grounds of Loreto High School Beaufort in Rathfarnham, every evening Monday to Friday from 6-7pm.

People attending will get the opportunity to meet others, have a chat and walk an average of 7,000 steps during the hour under the pitch floodlights. It doesn’t matter what speed you walk at, it is simply about getting out, getting active and having a conversation while you are doing it!

Club Member Bronwyn O Donnell who is leading this idea within the club said “We noticed some of our members walking around the pitch during the dark evenings and spoke to a number of people who said they didn’t want to walk alone at night time. With the floodlights already on for our playing members we thought it would be a good and sustainable idea to invite others within our community to use the facility as there is a pathway all around the pitch and the pitch floodlights ensure it is a well-lit route.”

Members who had started using the pathway are already seeing the benefits. Club Member Sinead Dwyer said: “My sister and I meet on a Monday evening down in the club as both our children train at the same time and instead of chatting at the gate we started walking around the pitch and getting our steps in while catching up at the same time. It was great as I got to know a few other mothers and fathers from the area who were doing the same thing at the same time. Now while my daughter gets her exercise in, so do I!”

Loreto Hockey Club are encouraging all within the local community to come up and participate in this Walk and Talk community Initiative which will run as a pilot for three weeks every week day until  Friday  March 10 between 6-7pm.

All you need is a pair of runners and a warm coat.

There will also be a cup of tea/coffee available in the Clubhouse at the end of your walk.
