People Before Profit TD for Dublin Mid-West, Gino Kenny, claims he is receiving a growing number of communications from worried parents re the lack of secondary school places in his constituency.
Deputy Kenny has written to the Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD and called on her to clarify the situation for next September. He further stated she needs to urgently provide the necessary funding and resources to the Dublin Mid-West area so more places can be allocated.
He said: “Parents of children due to attend secondary school in September have contacted our constituency office about the availability of school places for the next school year in the Mid-West area. These parents are very concerned because of the lack of spaces currently available.
“This issue is one of capacity in the existing schools. Every year parents are told that their child is on a waiting list, these lists seems to get larger by the year because of lack of capacity in the existing schools. And this is only exacerbated by more housing development in the locality which will mean an even greater demand for places!
“Simply put, we need more school places in the area to satisfy the growing demand. I have asked that the Minister allocate more resources and funding to the Mid-West area so that these children can be guaranteed places for next year’s school term.”
