The Irish restaurant has been in Temple Bar since 1989 and the new location opened in Rathmines last week.
The brand was first born in New York. Having escaped to London from war torn Germany as a young boy, George Schwartz passed a certain tube station with a fairytale name on his way to medical college each day and fell in love with the name.
Having trained as a doctor and shortly after relocating to New York City, George endured decades of disappointing lunch breaks while working in the hospital.
When he retired, George decided to open up a place that he would like to eat in every single day and went about setting up his own restaurant with a special name.
Elephant & Castle Greenwich Avenue opened in Lower Manhattan in 1973, across from St. Vincent’s Hospital where George had worked since the 1950s.
George’s passion and obsession for quality was infectious and Elephant & Castle became a New York classic within a few short years.
One of George’s most trusted chefs, Liz Mee, came home to Ireland on a visit in 1988. He decided to follow her to Dublin and find a location and premises as similar as possible to Prince Street. Late 80s desolate Temple Bar was his decision.
And now the popular brand is spreading its wings with the second Elephant & Castle located on the corner of Rathmines Road and Castlewood Avenue.
The menu will feature the same great dishes that make Elephant & Castle a firm favourite, from the fluffy omelettes, buttermilk pancakes, caesar salads and juicy burgers, to, of course, those crispy spicy wings.
The atmosphere is relaxed in the 110-seater restaurant which is spacious and bright with large windows looking out onto buzzing Rathmines – perfect for people watching.
