Fingal County Council honoured 24 individuals as Community Champions as part of this year’s Mayor’s Awards, writes Rose Barrett.

At least 230 nominations were received, outlining the efforts of people who aren’t normally in the spotlight – for volunteering at local shelters to mentoring students, from organizing clean-up campaigns to leading fundraising initiatives for vital causes.

Announcing the winners at a gala event held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown recently, former Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Howard Mahony praised the efforts of the Community Champions to make Fingal a better place. Master of Ceremonies for the occasion was leading sports commentator and television presenter, Marty Morrissey.

This year the focus of the Mayor’s Awards was to recognise the significant contribution made by countless individuals across Fingal who have played a key role supporting those in need. Members of the public were invited to nominate people they believed were going the extra mile to support others in their communities, be it for sporting, cultural, health, good citizenship, or environmental reasons. An independent judging panel with extensive experience in community development and volunteering undertook a review of the entries before deciding who this year’s recipients should be.

Handing out the awards, Mayor Mahony said: “These are the unsung heroes, the ordinary people doing extraordinary things, who have dedicated themselves to serving our community for the greater good. Their kindness and unwavering commitment to helping others within Ireland’s fastest growing county, make an immeasurable difference to our society.”
