Almost 62,000 students will receive their Leaving Certificate results this morning, and many fearfully awaiting results in the hope of achieving third level places for their chosen career.
Bizarely, Minister for Education, Norma Foley requested that results received by the class of 2023 would be no
lower than last year’s – and therefore, results when ‘re-marked’ were adjusted by upwards of 8%!
The recent post-marking adjustment is notably higher than upgrades made to last year’s markings which averaged at 5.6%.
Understandably, students were impacted during the restrictions of the pandemic when schools were closed and exam students studied at home with online advice/projects and work set by teachers.
Figures this year reveal that 71% of all Leaving Cert grades awarded this year have risen when compared with 50% last year.
The State Examinations Commission stated the adjustments were required as the 2023 base aggregate results were
significantly below last year’s results. But is this fair, and does it give students false results, and higher gradings for
careers that demand intensive academic work at third level?
Academic route is not for all!
The academic route is not for everyone so students should not be daunted by not achieved high grades in today’s results.
Grades can be boostered by taking a PLC course which will allow you to start your degree at an Education Training Board
and you be guaranteed entry to a third level degree programme.
For those who prefer a ‘hands-on’ career, apprenticeship programmes are the route to go, and are subsidised as you progress
your studies and practical experience. There is still a shortage in professional trades in the construction industry – carpenters
roofers, electricians etc, along with opportunities in the auto-electrics and mechanic trades.
And for other school leavers, this is the time to assess your interests for now – many will travel or go into paid employment
and make final career choices in the years ahead. This is just another phase of your life and your decision what route
you take in life!
