Dubliner and Aslan frontman Christy Dignam would dearly wish that his daughter Kiera would carry on his legacy by singing the songs he has made famous over a star-studded career.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on RTE Radio 1 last Monday morning, the star said that if he “was looking down from heaven” he would “dearly love” if it was Kiera who kept his songs alive.

Christy (62) is being cared for at his family home in Finglas, having entered palliative care last January. “If there is anyone on Earth who has the right to sing those songs, it would be her,” he told Ryan during an interview which evoked a huge outpouring of responses from listeners.

“In some ways, she has been unlucky being my daughter, because people think that her success is just because she is Christy Dignam’s daughter. But she has a real talent. I wouldn’t say that and have her going out making a show of herself. She has a real talent and a lot of the stuff has been written around when she was growing up. She is the only person on Earth who has the right to do it in that way.

The interview ended with the singer’s song for his wife Kathryn whom he met as a 14-year-old and described her as his “buffer to the world. I’ve made loads of dodgy decisions in my life and loads of mistakes. I don’t regret them because I am happy where I am at now.

“And if I had to go through them to arrive here, then I am quite happy with that. But one decision… I feel like I won the lotto when I met Kathryn. She has always supported me, she used to come around putting up posters and she is still there,” he said.

He added:  Your family is what it is really about. But a true friend is like gold dust… like hen’s teeth. She protects me. She is like a buffer to the world to me. It’s amazing to have someone who you love enough and trust enough – there is nothing she would do to hurt me.”
