This September, Ireland will host the prestigious International Epilepsy Congress (IEC) for the first time since 1997.

Organised biennially by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), the IEC is the largest international scientific epilepsy meeting in the world, and it is expected that up to 3,000 professionals in epilepsy care will attend the event at the Convention Centre Dublin between September 2nd and 6th.

In an exciting development, Epilepsy Ireland, the national patient organisation representing people with epilepsy and their families, has collaborated with the ILAE and the IBE to introduce a special public program as part of the Congress. This marks the first time that public facing events will be held as part of this major international congress.

The two evenings of the public program on September 4th and 5th will feature leading epilepsy experts from around the globe who will engage with Irish patients and their families, sharing their expertise and insights in easily understandable language. The specialists will present “plain English” versions of their presentations from the main congress, making the information accessible and relatable to the general public. These include sessions on the genetics of epilepsy, the ketogenic diet, seizure detection technologies, and precision therapies in the treatment of epilepsy – amongst much more.

Commenting on the first ever public programme taking place in Ireland, Epilepsy Ireland CEO Peter Murphy said, “Epilepsy Ireland has worked alongside the ILAE, the IBE and over a dozen of the world’s leading epilepsy experts in organising this ground-breaking initiative, which ensures that there is a patient facing element to what has historically been an event for medical and scientific professionals. We believe the public program is informative, engaging, and tailored to the needs of people with epilepsy and their families and is a unique opportunity to interact with world-renowned experts in epilepsy care which will prove to be an invaluable experience for all attendees.

“As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of the 35th International Epilepsy Congress, Epilepsy Ireland invites people with epilepsy, their families and the wider public to join us and be a part of this landmark event. We are thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion and to bring the world’s leading epilepsy experts to the Irish community as part of the public events on September 4th & 5th.”
