What we want for Christmas – from novelty socks to organic skincare

by Gazette Reporter

Novelty socks, tweed throws and and organic skincare products are set to top Ireland’s Christmas gift charts, a new survey has found.

And consumers loosened the purse strings in 2021 as the average order on leading craft and design site giftedfromireland.com rose by 16% to €120.

More than a fifth (22%) of gifts bought on the platform in the last week were shipped to countries such as Russia, Dubai, the US and Canada.

The site’s 2021 Index of gifts bought during the year revealed that the top five for adults are handmade glassware, humorous socks, Donegal tweed throws, art prints and organic skincare sets – with the Cló Irish Crystal Whiskey Tumbler from Waterford-based Criostal na Rinne the top seller.

“A total of 85% of our customers are female, but they purchase a very wide range of products suitable for men, women, children, and all age groups, which indicates to us that a huge number of our products are bought as gifts for special occasions,” said Patrick O’Sullivan of giftedfromireland.com.

“Male shoppers are less likely to make multiple individual visits to the site, but more likely to make one large, multi-item purchase.”

As shoppers gravitate towards comfort, the ‘Yer Man’, ‘Yer Wan’ and ‘Did you turn off the Immersion?’ socks from Irish Socksciety in Galway are strong new entries in the gift charts.

Novelty ‘Did you turn off the Immersion?’ socks from Irish Socksciety, which featured among the most popular items in the 2021 giftedfromireland.com index.

Customers are also taking their beauty needs into their own hands and the ‘Luxurious Self Care Gift Box’ from sustainable brand Oxmantown Skincare in Dublin, has also made it into the top five.

In interiors, a trend is emerging for vibrant coloured homewares such as the Scandinavian inspired ‘Wrap Wall Hooks’ from Coolree Design, Kildare, which are made from sustainably sourced hardwood.

There has been a huge rise in demand for sustainable gifting this year as people strive to feel good about giving and receiving gifts, concentrating on shopping locally and being kind to the planet.

The top five sustainable gifts on giftedfromireland.com are gift sets from Oxmantown Skincare, organic cotton pyjamas from Moon and Mellow, sharing slabs of dark chocolate from Bean and Goose, beeswax reusable food wraps and micellar water and bamboo face cleansing sets.

Jewellery, as ever, tops the list of gifts for her, followed by some glamorous Champagne coupes, self-care boxes, feast-sized bars of dark chocolate and diffuser and candle gift sets.

“Our top-selling jewellery item is a wonderful Karma Wheel from Andrea Mears, inspired by the spinning prayer wheels of Buddhist Tibet,” said Mr O’Sullivan.

“The top selling men’s item this year is a screen print from the Aran Art Studio, inspired by the Aran sweater, and reflecting the garment’s unique heritage.

“Also in the top five (men’s list) are a modern crystal whiskey decanter, Donegal tweed scarves, speciality roasted coffee gift sets and, proving to be a strong seller, the ‘Full Irish Breakfast’ themed socks.”

Giftedfromireland.com has been developed by the organisers of Ireland’s largest craft and design fair, Gifted, and features many of the makers from the RDS Fair.
