In terms of design, build quality, safety systems, infotainment, drivability and affordability, the new Opel Corsa ticks all the boxes.

Having made its world premiere at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt last September, the new Corsa is now available in Ireland with the option of petrol, diesel and 100% electric power.

The new Corsa has already won the prestigious title of “Best Buy Car” for Europe in 2020, and is testament to the terrific value for money that Opel’s new small car offers right across the range.

Total Reassurance:

Every Corsa variant is equipped with numerous state-of-the-art assistance systems for total reassurance when on the move. These include forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, as well as intelligent speed control, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition.

The new Corsa benefits from technology borrowed from Opel’s new parent company, the PSA Group, with one of the main benefits being the switch to the new Peugeot 208’s platform. As a result, the new Corsa is up to 108kg lighter than its predecessor, while the platform is 15% firmer for an even greater driving experience.

From its expressive front end to its striking rear design, the new Corsa boasts an eye-catching silhouette from every angle, and for ultimate personalisation, it is possible to add a black or white roof to your favorite exterior colour.

Five Trim Levels:

The new Opel Corsa is available in a choice of five generously-equipped trim levels – SC, SC Premium, SRi, SRi Premium and Elite – with just a five-door bodystyle available.

Key features in entry level SC trim includes 16” alloy wheels, LED daytime running-lights and headlights, electronic climate control, remote central locking, a multi-function steering wheel, and a sports tailgate spoiler, along with a suite of safety features normally only found in higher vehicle classes, while SC Premium trim adds even more equipment.

Sporty SRi trim boasts a distinctive exterior design, sports seats, alloy sports pedals, black headliner and a full digital cluster, while SRi Premium is loaded with even more comfort and technology features. Range-topping Elite trim offers an extra level of luxury.

Its elegant exterior is highlighted with a chrome grille, chrome belt line, full LED headlights and LED fog lamps. Inside, driver and passengers enjoy refined materials and ambient lighting, adding to the feeling of calm elegance.

Engine & Transmission Options:

Engine options in the new Opel Corsa include a 1.2-litre petrol unit with 75bhp (SC & SC Premium) and 100bhp (SRi, SRi Premium & Elite), and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel with 102bhp (SC, SC Premium & Elite).

Also available is a fully-electric Corsa-e which promises an impressive range of 337 km’s (WLTP) without recharging. A five-speed manual gearbox comes as standard with the lower-powered petrol engine, while the higher-powered unit benefits from an extra gear.

A slick eight-speed automatic transmission is available in SC Premium and Elite trim levels (100bhp), while the Corsa’s diesel engine attracts a six-speed manual gearbox.

Car on Review:

My review car was an Opel Corsa Elite 1.5-litre Diesel which was finished in striking Power Orange premium metallic paintwork, with a contrasting black roof, A-pillars and door mirror covers, along with 17” diamond-cut gloss-black twin-spoke alloy wheels, for maximum visual impact.

Class-leading innovations and safety features in the Corsa Elite include a flat-bottomed leather-covered steeting wheel, heated front seats and steering wheel, automatic wipers and headlights, fabric/premium leather effect seat trim, panoramic rear-view camera, front & rear parking sensors, keyless entry & start, dark tinted rear windows, side blind spot alert and flank guard, remote control security alarm system, and ISOFIX child seat fixings on outer rear seats.

Opel’s intuitive Multimedia Navi Pro system also comes as standard, and consists of satellite navigation with European coverage, Bluetooth™ audio streaming and mobile phone portal, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, along with OpelConnect – a smart range of services delivering a new degree of security and support, allowing you to stay connected on the road.

Impressive Performance:

On the road, the new Corsa is stable, surefooted and offers good grip in corners, while flexible in-gear performance from the turbo-diesel engine is impressive.

With 102bhp and a hefty 250Nm of torque available, the 1,499cc 4-cylinder engine allows for a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 10.2-seconds, while fuel consumption as low as 4.0l/100km (70mpg) is possible on a combined driving cycle (WLTP). A strong brake pedal feel ensures solid brake performance, while the Corsa’s suspension handles road undulations with ease.

Thanks to a wheelbase of 2,538mm, the new Corsa’s cabin provides great head, leg and elbow room for all occupants, while a 309-litre boot can be expanded to 1,118-litres when the rear seat back are folded flat.

Verdict, Pricing & Warranty:

Overall, the new Opel Corsa combines high everyday benefits with top technologies, economy, an exciting design plus lots of fun behind the wheel.

More efficient, more advanced and more dynamic than ever before, the all-new Opel Corsa is the future-ready German city car. Pricing for the new Opel Corsa starts at just €17,975 (ex-delivery).

A comprehensive 3 Year/100,000km warranty demonstrates Opel’s conviction in the reliable German engineering of their vehicles.
